It has been tough to get out in the water recently. At least I can live vicariously through my friends. This weekend I got a text from one of my former players who was looking to try a wild brownie stream I hit once last year. After talking him through location, entomology, fly selection and tactics for the days conditions he was off to visit this small tailwater. I was very satisfied when he sent me a pic of this football. Great work! Maybe I can hit the stream soon.
You don't have to go far to find migratory browns. While the fish I found are not as large as what you find in Patagonia or the Great Lakes tribs they are powerful little fish that far out fight their stream bound relatives. These things were thick and angry. The scenery wasn't bad either. Enjoy! I'd also like to give a big shot out to Simms for their guide jacket. It kept we dry and comfortable throughout the ore hurricane weather. I fished a 7 ft 5 wt fenwick glass rod. Nothing moves line in small stream situations like these rods. Glass just loads so much beter than today's mega fast rods. Most of my casts were of the roll variety. Change of direction/sustained anchor casts are your friend. I used a short chunky leader terminating in 4 x flouro and a super flashy micro bugger. Rock on!
My older brother is on the Madison fishing. Family obligations kept me back east this time though I hope to make it out next year.
Technology as great as it is does not do this home away from home river justice. It is cold out there. Decked out in new Simms waders from A Marblehead Flyfisher, Rich is using the usual fall streamer and dropper rig. Earlier in the day most fish fell to the prince dropper. Later on they started to fall to my uv ice dubbed cone head green over died bleached zonked. That fly is tied on a size 4 9394 but ties on a tube or cut shank equally well. Most of the fish are browns, with the one featured below being typical. He also reported one cut bow. Nothing beats a fall take of a swung fly. Enjoy! Check out these photos from yestedays trip to the GP. Brown caught a sweet football of a bow. I love wild fish. We had to work for them in the middle of the day but they were there. We even got our fishing in before the kayak hatch.
I'll never disclose the location. It was caught on a 2 wt sage txl on 5 x with a heavily weighted sparkle bugger.
